Emma Roddick MSP: Community Transport is vital and needs our support

Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick has commended the crucial work of local community transport initiatives, following a visit to Partnerships for Wellbeing in Inverness.

The discussion focused on the challenges faced by individuals, including wheelchair users, in accessing essential healthcare appointments and social activities due to transport limitations.

During her visit, Ms Roddick discussed with Partnerships for Wellbeing how she can best support their ongoing efforts to bridge transport gaps for many Inverness residents. This visit follows previous discussions with other Highland organisations, Wheels in Nairnshire and Badenoch and Strathspey Community ConnXions.

Recognising the significant impact these charities have on the lives of local people, Emma Roddick MSP has already taken action, successfully lobbying Transport Scotland to widen funding eligibility.

Commenting on her visit, Emma Roddick MSP said:

“It was lovely to meet with the dedicated team at Partnerships for Wellbeing. Their commitment to ensuring everyone in our community can access healthcare and social opportunities really is inspiring.

“However, it’s clear that despite their tireless efforts, many people, particularly disabled people, still face huge hurdles when it comes to transport.

“I’ve already raised concerns with Transport Scotland about the funding challenges these charities encounter, and I’ll continue to engage with the Highland Council and NHS Highland about how to better work with those who are trying to bridge the gap.

“My goal is to explore solutions around accessible taxis and encouraging stronger partnership working, particularly through coordinating appointment times for those with transport limitations.  We must ensure nobody is left behind – which is possible if the public sector works well with charities who know their service users and know the local area.”

The SNP MSP pledged to maintain close contact with Partnerships for Wellbeing as she continues her discussions with Highland Council and NHS Highland to explore solutions for accessible transport and collaborative working, especially concerning appointment scheduling for individuals with transport challenges.
