The Scottish Government must provide clarity on the timeline for the A96 Nairn Bypass to ensure the long-awaited project delivers for local residents and businesses, according to Inverness and Nairn’s MSP, Emma Roddick.
The A96 dualling programme, and specifically the bypass at Nairn, has been a matter of significant concern for the local community for many years. Ms Roddick used her first question in the new session of the Scottish Parliament to seek an updated position from the new Scottish Government, ensuring that the safety and economic needs of her constituents remain at the forefront of the ministerial agenda.
Reflecting on the importance of the project to the town, Ms Roddick said:
“The people of Nairn have waited a long time for certainty on this bypass, and I wanted my very first act in the chamber to show that I am listening to those concerns. Improving this stretch of road is the most urgent infrastructure need in the constituency. It touches on safety, quality of life, and economic potential, and it came up constantly on the doors. People want to see things happening on the ground as soon as possible.
“I was determined to put this directly to the Scottish Government as early as possible and lodged this question within minutes of being sworn in today. It is vital that we have an honest and open dialogue about the next steps for the A96 so that our local community is kept informed and involved. I will continue to be a strong voice for Nairn to ensure this project remains a priority.”
Ms Roddick has committed to working closely with the new Cabinet Secretary for Transport and local stakeholders to monitor progress on the bypass. She believes that clear communication from the government is essential to maintain public confidence in the delivery of infrastructure improvements across the Highlands.
