Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick marked the 20th anniversary of the Railways Act (2005) in a speech to the Scottish Parliament today, celebrating the devolution of control over Scotland’s rail services as a powerful example of what Scotland can achieve with greater self-governance. She emphasised that independence would allow Scotland to take full control of its resources and infrastructure, enabling stronger, long-term decisions that truly reflect the needs of its people.
Ms Roddick highlighted the benefits that devolution of rail travel has brought to her region, with improved commuting experience, greater travel options, and stronger connectivity across the region.
The MSP commented:
“The devolved rail network has strengthened the Highlands, both by connecting our communities and creating new economic opportunities for local businesses. Having local control over our infrastructure has directly led to better decisions that benefit the people of the Highlands, and it’s a perfect example of the kind of change we can achieve when Scotland holds more power.
“This success is proof of what we can achieve when Scotland can make its own decisions: the more control we have over our own resources, like transport, the better we can serve our people. This shows that independence is a practical path to ensuring that Scotland’s needs and aspirations are met.”
