The SNP’s Islands MSP Emma Roddick has expressed deep concern and disappointment over the Labour Government’s decision to scrap the Winter Heating Payment, leaving vulnerable households across the Highlands and Islands facing soaring energy bills amidst freezing temperatures.
The Winter Heating Payment, a lifeline for those struggling to heat their homes during the coldest months, has been axed despite the ongoing cost of living crisis and the recent harsh weather conditions impacting the region.
The SNP MSP said:
“This is a shameful decision by the UK Government that will have devastating consequences for individuals and families across Orkney, where we are seeing harsher weather than that in the rest of the country.
“Many people in our region relied on this vital support to keep warm during the winter, and removing it is simply unacceptable, especially when temperatures have plummeted so dramatically.
“I’ve been inundated with concerns from constituents worried about their bills and the extreme cold they are experiencing. The removal of the UK’s Winter Fuel Payment comes as energy bills continue to rise, placing an immense burden on households already struggling to make ends meet, and despite campaign promises from Labour to reduce energy bills – which have, of course, now risen twice instead.
“The Scottish Government has committed to reintroducing a universal Winter Heating Payment for pensioners at the earliest opportunity, but the UK Government should reverse this heartless decision and reinstate the Winter Fuel Payment immediately to allow us to provide support now.
“I urge anyone who is currently struggling to heat their home to seek advice. My team is ready to give advice or signpost to local organisations like THAW. l will continue to raise this issue in the Scottish Parliament and press the UK Government to take the urgent action that only it can.”
