MSP for the Highlands & Islands Emma Roddick has welcomed the announcement from the First Minister today [4th September] that rent controls will be included in the upcoming Housing (Scotland) Bill.
The First Minister announced that amendments will be introduced at stage 2 of the Housing Bill to protect tenants.
Speaking on this, Emma said:
“I really welcome the announcement from the First Minister today confirming that rent controls will be brought forward under his government in the upcoming Housing Bill.
“We have seen rent prices skyrocket in recent years across not only the region, but the country as a whole, and I believe rent controls are absolutely vital to protect tenants from rising costs.
“A house should not be built to be used as an investment portfolio, on which landlords can expect endless returns at the expense of tenants who are looking for a safe, affordable, and secure place to call home.
“As someone who has experienced homelessness at a young age, I know how important it is to have somewhere to call home, and I will continue to remind colleagues that the right to a home is the most important consideration in these discussions – not profits.”
