As the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact people across the Highlands and Islands, below are some organisations that can offer you support.
I am aware that many of my constituents are facing particular challenges with the cost of living over winter. I want to make sure that as many eligible people as possible apply for financial support; nobody should feel they have to struggle.
- If you rent your home and get Housing Benefit or Universal Credit or are affected by the UK bedroom tax or benefit caps, you may be eligible for a Discretionary Housing Payment.
- If you are struggling to pay your energy bills, talk to your supplier: they may have a scheme to support you. You may be able to get £150 off your bill if you qualify for the Warm Home Discount.
- The Money Talk Team service can also offer free money and debt advice, including on energy bills if you feel these are too high.
- You will get Winter Heating Payment automatically if you already receive a qualifying benefit, or Pension Age Winter Heating Payment if you are of State Pension age and earn less than £35,000 a year.
- If you need urgent help to pay for food or fuel, contact your local council. They may be able to offer access to the Scottish Welfare Crisis Grant or a referral to community food organisations.
- If you are pregnant or have young children, check your eligibility for the Best Start Grant, Best Start Foods, and Scottish Child Payment. You can apply for all with one application to Social Security Scotland.
- If you are disabled and face extra costs due to your condition or its impacts, you should check your eligibility for Child, Adult, or Pension Age Disability Payment through Social Security Scotland.
My office is in regular contact with Social Security Scotland, and I stand ready to help if you need any advice on eligibility or the application process for any of these schemes. If you, or someone you know, may be entitled to this support, find out more at www.mygov.scot/browse/benefits and reach out if I can be of assistance.
