MSP for the Highlands and Islands Emma Roddick has hailed the full rollout of Adult Disability Payment across the region, with hundreds of thousands of disabled people who previously received Personal Independence Payment now getting the Scottish payment.

Ms Roddick, who has been a vocal advocate for disabled people’s rights, previously raised concerns in Parliament about the transition process. Her intervention led the Scottish Government to commit to a correct and seamless transfer for all individuals.

Ms Roddick commented on the recent figures released:

“It’s great to hear that those in the Highlands and Islands who used to get the Personal Independence Payment have been transferred onto the Adult Disability Payment, marking a monumental day where disability benefits are focused on dignity, fairness, and respect.

“I am proud to have played a part in ensuring this transfer was handled correctly from the start. We must always protect and support disabled people in our communities, and this new payment scheme is a crucial step towards that goal.

“This new approach stands in stark contrast to the often impersonal, and punitive experiences people faced under the previous DWP-run system. By focusing on showing claimants the respect and trust they deserve, we are building a social security service that works for the people of Scotland, ensuring they get the support they need to live with dignity.”
