Roddick’s Wildfire Motion gains cross-party support

Emma Roddick MSP has welcomed the overwhelming support for a motion she lodged in Parliament, which calls for a review of wildfire prevention and response strategies in Scotland. The motion, which highlights the unique vulnerability of the Highlands and Islands to these devastating events, gained the cross-party backing required for a debate in less than an hour.

The motion notes the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires across Scotland and the grave impact they have on the environment, economy, and communities. It recognises the particular risk faced by the Highlands and Islands due to its expansive rural landscape and peatlands. Ms Roddick has called on the Scottish Government to review its current strategies and for cross-party collaboration to develop a long-term plan to mitigate the threat of wildfires.

Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick said:

“I have been deeply concerned by the number of wildfires we have seen, particularly in our region, and the destruction they can cause.  These events put immense pressure on our emergency services and local communities, and it is vital we have a robust, long-term plan in place to tackle them.

“I also know from my caseload that these are concerns shared by many constituents.  I have already engaged with the Scottish Government, Highland Council, and Police Scotland about what more can be done to prevent further incidents like those seen regularly in recent years.

“I am grateful for the overwhelming and swift cross-party support for this motion from SNP colleagues as well as members in the Green, Labour, and Conservative parties.  It sends a clear message that this is an issue we all take seriously and that we are united in our commitment to protecting our communities and our unique environment. So,  I now look forward to the debate and hope we can work together to build a more resilient Highlands and Islands and ensure we are better prepared for everything coming in the future.”
