Roddick MSP welcomes First Minister’s support for safe routes from Gaza

Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick has welcomed the First Minister’s support for the UK Government to open safe routes for those with family in Scotland to leave Gaza.  The First Minister responded to Ms Roddick’s question in Parliament, agreeing that the UK Government should reconsider its position due to the “awfulness” of the current situation.  The call comes as many people across the Highlands and Islands continue to join protests and vigils to show solidarity with the people of Palestine.

Ms Roddick has met with constituents at protests in Inverness who have family members personally affected by the conflict. She has previously engaged with the Gaza Families Reunited campaign, which advocates for safe passage for those with family in the UK. The First Minister confirmed that the Scottish Government has also previously engaged with the campaign.

Following her question in Parliament, Ms Roddick said:

“It is a huge reassurance to hear the First Minister affirm his belief that the UK Government should be doing more to support families in Scotland who are desperate to bring their loved ones to safety. I am so proud of my constituents who have shown up week after week, in rain or shine, to lend their voices to the many opposing the genocide in Gaza.

“These protests are not abstract; they are made up of people with loved ones who are right now in unimaginable peril, and we cannot stand idly by.  This is an issue that is affecting families in our own communities, and I will continue to work to represent their voices and push for action.”
