Emma Roddick MSP calls for urgent UK Government action for Gaza students

Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick has urged the UK Government to act urgently to support students from Gaza who have been offered university places in Scotland.

The call follows a recent intervention by First Minister John Swinney, who has urged Westminster to do everything in its power to facilitate the safe passage of Palestinian students. Many other European countries have already evacuated students to safety.

Ms Roddick highlighted the need to assist those who have been offered places at Scottish universities, but who are currently unable to leave Gaza due to visa barriers and other logistical challenges.

Commenting, Ms Roddick said:

“The people of Shetland have a strong sense of community and care, and I know they are following the humanitarian crisis in Gaza with great concern. I have been struck by the compassion of people across the islands who have been doing what they can to show solidarity with those suffering.

“It is deeply distressing to hear that students, who have already endured unimaginable suffering, are now being prevented from taking up life-changing educational opportunities. The Scottish Government and our universities are ready to welcome them, but we need the UK Government to step up and ensure they can get here.

“This is not just an issue of education; it’s an issue of humanity. The UK Government must use all available diplomatic channels to facilitate the safe evacuation of these students.

“The continued lack of action from Westminster is simply not good enough. People in Shetland are watching, and they want to see action.”
