Emma Roddick MSP has encouraged organisations in the Highlands to apply for funding the Scottish Government is offering to those who support victims of crime.

The fund is made up of money collected through court fines, where someone convicted of a crime is ordered to pay a victim surcharge. It has paid out over £2.4m to 18 organisations since it opened in 2019, reaching over 5,000 victims of crime.

The Highlands and Islands MSP said:

“I know so many organisations in the Highlands work really hard to support those who have been victims of crime. That’s tough but invaluable work, and I encourage anyone who thinks they might be eligible for it to apply to this fund.”

“Too many people experience loss, hardship, and trauma as a result of crimes committed against them. While we can’t always prevent this from happening, the justice system can always do something to support those impacted and treat them with compassion.”

“Local charities who help with this necessary work should take this opportunity and apply to the Victim Surcharge Fund today.”

The fund closes to applications on 4th August.
