SNP MSP takes to TikTok to share updates on SNP delivery in Isles – “At first, I was scared of the platform”

Emma Roddick MSP has released a new TikTok video showcasing ten key achievements of the SNP government that are benefiting island communities across the Highlands and Islands.

The video, titled “10 things the SNP is doing for our islands,” shines a light on the positive impact of SNP policies, from transport improvements to financial support. The video covers a range of initiatives, including the extension of the under-22 bus pass to inter-island ferries, which has made travel more affordable and accessible for young islanders.

It also highlights the significance of the National Islands Plan and the associated Islands Programme funding, which supports sustainable development and economic growth in island areas. Other successes featured include investment in digital connectivity, support for island businesses, and measures to protect the unique cultural heritage of island communities.

Emma said:

“Politicians are constantly having to evolve the way that we communicate with constituents and react to new ways of sharing information. I know that many people, particularly young folk, now get their news and information on current events primarily from social media platforms like TikTok.

“I might be the youngest MSP, but I still felt like I was too old for TikTok when I first started the account. I was actually scared of posting on the platform – it has its own language and I just wasn’t used to making videos. But now, I really enjoy being able to put across my thoughts in a way that lets people see my face, hear my voice, and hopefully hear the whole thing rather than making assumptions based on short clips, and it’s great to get comments from people I know aren’t ever going to end up in my parliamentary inbox or mailbag.

“I hope that people will take a look at what I’m highlighting on there, in my own words and in an accessible way.

“Our island communities are a vital part of the Highlands and Islands, and it’s crucial that their voices are heard. This latest video is a way to highlight the real progress the SNP is making for islanders. From connecting young people to opportunities through affordable travel to investing in the future of our islands through the National Islands Plan, the SNP is delivering for island communities.

”I also highlighted the many projects supported so far through the Islands Programme, which, of course, included over £200,000 for the Fair Isle Bird Observatory, almost £140,000 for Hymhus Phase 2, and over £275,000 for the Papa Stour Kirk.

“I’m proud to represent these communities in the Scottish Parliament and will continue to champion their needs.”
