MSP for the Highlands and Islands region Emma Roddick today visited Highland BlindCraft in Inverness, a social enterprise providing employment and training opportunities for disabled people. Ms Roddick’s visit focused on the crucial role organisations like Highland BlindCraft play in tackling social isolation and poverty within the Highlands, filling gaps in provision while sustaining a profitable and productive business.
During her visit, Ms Roddick met with staff and trainees, learning about the traditional crafts they produce and the positive impact the organisation has on their lives. She was particularly impressed by the sense of community and support which exists at Highland BlindCraft, helping to combat the isolation often experienced by disabled people.
She said:
“Highland BlindCraft is a shining example of how social enterprises can make a real difference in people’s lives.
“The team not only provides valuable skills and employment opportunities but also creates a supportive and inclusive environment where individuals can succeed. Too often, disabled people are unfairly locked out of the workplace, but when you have organisations that really ‘get it’, it makes a world of difference.
“Organisations like this are vital in our efforts to tackle poverty and social isolation in the Highlands, ensuring that everyone has the chance to participate fully in our communities.
“It’s so important to support organisations which have real social value, empowering individuals and including everyone. I am committed to working with Highland BlindCraft and other social enterprises – which the Highlands isn’t short of – as a local MSP.”
