EMMA RODDICK MSP STRESSES THE NEED FOR A SOCIAL TARIFF IN THE REGION

MSP for the Highlands & Islands Emma Roddick has stressed the need for a social tariff to be introduced, particularly in the Highlands and Islands, questioning the First Minister on his work to pursue lower energy bills for those who have the least to spend. 

Emma highlighted the fact that on top of the UK Labour Government cutting the winter fuel payment, energy prices are set to rise by £149 in October.

Speaking after FMQs, Emma said:

“Westminster’s decision to take the winter fuel payment away from 860,000 pensioners, coupled with the fact energy prices are set to rise by around 10%, disproportionately affects people who live in my region.

“We know that we experience much harsher winters than the rest of the country and have extremely high levels of fuel poverty, yet there is nothing further in place beyond the limited winter fuel payment to protect people.

“I was glad to hear from the First Minister that the Scottish Government will be undertaking work to co-design a social tariff. This is so needed for Scotland, but especially in the Highlands and Islands, which – despite being an energy rich region – is home to far too many people who are dreading the winter.

“I will continue to push for a social tariff that reflects the energy generated in the region and the harsher conditions we face so that no one goes cold this winter.”
