MSP for the Highlands & Islands Emma Roddick has called on the UK Government to cooperate with the Scottish Government to ensure a Rural Visa pilot can be brought forward in Scotland. 

The Rural Visa Pilot Scheme, outlined as a commitment in the Programme for Government, would allow rural communities to attract workers to the area to work in sectors in need, such as hospitality and social care.

Commenting, Emma said:

“I have heard from constituents and businesses across the region that they are seriously struggling to recruit staff, with some having to reduce their hours or close completely due to a lack of workers in the area.

“A rural visa pilot scheme would allow businesses to recruit workers into the area who want to live and work there, which would benefit the local community not only economically, but also with population growth, which we know is a huge challenge in the region. 

“The Scottish Government has committed to implementing this, and I urge the UK Government to work with us and devolve the powers to this parliament to ensure our rural communities can thrive.”
