Emma Roddick MSP pressed the Scottish Government last week for “clarity” on rules around wood-burning stoves, following confusion as to whether they are banned for use in new-build properties as a main heating source despite being a sustainable fuel.

The Minister for Climate Action, Gillian Martin, confirmed in the Chamber that she will be undertaking an urgent review of the policy.

Speaking after the question time, Ms Roddick said:

“I am pleased the Minister is undertaking an urgent review of this policy. I have had constituents get in touch confused about whether their planned homes, which will have very high energy ratings, can still go ahead in light of recent regulation announcements.

“I know the Minister herself represents a rural area and knows how important this issue is to many. We cannot allow people to be pushed further into fuel poverty on our journey to Net Zero. Rural and island areas are leading the way in sustainable practices, and it’s vital that the government listens to those voices when bringing in new policies.

“I will continue to press on this issue until the clarity that is required, for local residents but also councils, housing associations and developers, is given.”
