EMMA RODDICK MSP WELCOMES FURTHER ACTION TO HELP ISLAND COMMUNITIES THRIVE

Emma Roddick has welcomed an announcement from the Deputy First Minister, Shona Robison, that a new strategic National Islands Plan will be published next year.

In 2019, the first National Islands Plan was published, aiming to support and strengthen our islands by providing them with the resources they needed to continue to thrive.

The updated plan, due to be published in 2025, intends to strengthen the sense of community already felt within the islands, build further on access to local services, and maintain a high level of employment rates.

From July-November 2023, a public consultation was run and the independent analysis of responses, which has now been published by the Scottish Government, will help steer the new plan.

Speaking on the announcement, Emma said:

“It is great to hear that, next year, a new and updated National Islands Plan will be published, reflecting the opinions and experiences of communities who live in our islands. This follows a detailed consultation, which I know many people who have been in touch with my office to raise issues took part in.

“The sustainability and resilience of our islands communities is vital for Scotland’s future, and we know the challenges faced in communities here need proper consideration and solutions identified that are relevant to the local situation.

“That’s why the SNP is committed to working closely with islanders throughout the development of this plan to identify their priorities.  We know the views of locals are necessary to keep focus in the right places and build that future where our island communities are equal and can thrive.”
