Emma Roddick visted Da Gairdins to hear about the history of the land and how the charity was formed.
Da Gairdins in Whiteness is a 60-acre site filled with woodland, gardens, and ponds, with a view across the sea.
Ruby Inkster and her late husband Alan founded Da Gairdins, a place where her family had lived for decades.
Since then, they have grown trees on the land, created gardens for the public and wildlife to enjoy, and refurbished old croft houses that Ruby’s family once lived in.
Speaking on Da Gairdins, Emma said:
“It was a joy to meet Ruby Inkster and walk around Da Gairdins, hearing all about why she and her late husband, Alan, formed the charity and did all this work to create everything that now exists on the 60-acre site.
“From trees and ponds, to the information on the walls about the history of the renovated buildings that tell the story of the crofts that make it up, Da Gairdins is really such an interesting place full of history.
“Ruby is so passionate about what she has created and preserved here and it was an honour to get to hear, directly from her, all about this very special place she has created for the benefit of the environment.”
