EMMA HEARS OF STEPS FORWARD IN USE OF VIRTUAL COURTS

Emma visited the Inverness Justice Centre last week [Thursday 15th] to hear about the introduction of virtual courts.

The Inverness Justice Centre, opened in March 2020, has facilities in place that allow for witnesses to give evidence in court virtually. Not only does this help to preserve the quality of evidence, but it also allows for a more trauma-informed approach for witnesses.

Victim Support Scotland is also located in the building, available to provide support to those giving evidence.

Speaking on the Justice Centre, Emma said:

“It was really interesting to get to visit the Inverness Justice Centre last week, the first time I have managed to visit since it was moved from the castle.

“I was really glad to hear about the steps they are taking towards a trauma-informed approach, ensuring that those giving evidence have support through Victim Support Scotland, but also by offering witnesses a separate entrance and the opportunity to give their evidence remotely in an area outwith the main courtroom.

“These changes are really important and much needed in the justice system. When witnesses are called to give evidence, this can re-open the trauma of the initial incident all over again. “Steps must be taken in order to protect witnesses and victims when going through the court process.”
