EMMA RODDICK MSP COMMENDS WORK OF LOCAL THERAPY GARDENS IN TACKLING SOCIAL ISOLATION

Highlands & Islands MSP Emma Roddick has applauded the work of a local charity which runs gardening sessions for various groups of adults in the community.

Badenoch and Strathspey Therapy Gardens runs weekly sessions throughout the growing season (March to October) with groups across Kingussie and Aviemore in a bid to boost mental well-being and tackle social isolation.

Visiting the charity’s Aviemore garden, which is located at the Badenoch and Strathspey Community Hospital, Ms Roddick expressed her admiration for the team’s work in providing a space for people, often with additional or care needs, to come together, socialise, and learn new skills.

She said:

“It was wonderful to get along and see the Badenoch and Strathspey Therapy Gardens’ Aviemore site this week.

“I absolutely loved seeing all the wonderful plants that have been grown by the folk that come here and hearing all about how valued the sessions are by service users.

“I was particularly pleased to hear how the sessions often support learning disabled adults, who are at a higher risk of social isolation, and how it gives them a space to meet new folk, build relationships, and learn some new skills as well.

“Social isolation and its impacts are something I have focussed on a lot since being elected to the Scottish Parliament and initiatives like the gardening sessions here fill me with hope that we are making real positive progress in ensuring that nobody has to be lonely.”

“I want to thank Cheryl and Mary from the gardens for welcoming me into their wonderful community and I hope to get along to one of their sessions very soon.”
