SNP MSP WELCOMES MOVE TO HELP UKRAINIANS SEEKING REFUGE IN SCOTLAND

Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick has welcomed the passing of emergency regulations from the Scottish Government which will ensure that Ukrainian refugees brought to the UK won’t face extra barriers when claiming social security they are entitled to.

The decision to make the change passed without opposition in the Parliament this evening, and will mean Ukrainian refugees do not have to gather documents to prove residency, potentially adding weeks or months to their wait, before receiving any benefits they are entitled to.

Emma Roddick said:

“I have been overwhelmed with correspondence from people across the Highlands and Islands seeking to give a warm welcome to refugees arriving here from Ukraine.  From opening their homes to fundraising and campaigning on behalf of Ukrainians, there has been such a show of support to Ukraine and disgust to Putin’s regime.

“I am glad to see that the Scottish Government has taken quick action to echo this support shown by the people of the Highlands and Islands by ensuring that our European neighbours seeking refuge will not have to jump through unnecessary hoops to get them on their feet once they arrive.”
