WATCH: Emma Roddick seeks assurance misogyny in politics will not get in the way of policy tackling it

Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick has asked the Scottish Government about their plans to help combat misogyny in Scottish politics, questioning the Cabinet Secretary on how he would ensure misogyny in politics would not get in the way of progressing policy aimed at tackling it.

This comes in response to a recent report published on misogyny and criminal justice which has led to calls to make misogyny a criminal offence in Scotland.

Commenting, Roddick said:

“I was shocked, however, unfortunately, not surprised to read the findings of the report. I am supportive of a misogyny bill in Scotland; however, I feel strongly that this is a problem that needs to be tackled from the inside out.

“Misogyny is present in all corners of our society and politics is no exemption to this. It is essential that sexism and misogyny are challenged within politics so we can make impactful policy.  We cannot let misogynists in politics delay or water down wider action proposed by the Scottish Government.

“I am glad to hear the Cabinet Secretary is committed to challenging the findings of the report and has taken into account the responsibility of men in improving the current situation.”
