Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick has welcomed the announcement of an event providing free heart screening to all 14-35-year-olds and urged Shetlanders to register for the event when booking opens.
The event, organised by Shetland Heart Screening, will take place at the Clickimin Centre in Lerwick on 11-12 June, and registration will be made available around six weeks before the event takes place.
Commenting, Roddick said:
“This is the best gift that Shetland Heart Screening could have given Shetlanders on Valentine’s Day: an opportunity to think about their own hearts and what care they need.
“This wonderful initiative started after the untimely passing of 29-year-old John Pirie in December 2017 following a cardiac arrest. In Shetland, where the leading cause of death for men remains ischaemic heart disease, detecting symptoms of and preventing heart disease could not be more important.
“I hope all eligible Shetlanders take advantage of this fantastic opportunity and make sure they take care of their hearts this Valentine’s Day.”
