Highlands MSP says empowered communities will look after nature

Emma Roddick MSP visited Migdale and Ledmore woods this week to chat to Woodland Trust workers about upcoming changes to legislation and their plans to introduce capercaillie to the woods.

Roddick, who is the Scottish Environment LINK “Capercaillie Champion”, said:

“It was great to get out in the fresh air and talk to the Woodland Trust about a variety of topics including deer management, land reform, planning, and protecting native species – including trees and capercaillie.

“I am particularly happy to hear that the local community has been so involved in their recent project to reintroduce red squirrels to the area.

“There is a wealth of knowledge in the Highlands and I look forward to making the case during debates on the upcoming Land Reform Bill that communities must come first. If you involve local people who have a stake in the area in decision-making, they will look after nature and contribute to the sustainability of their environment.

“I look forward to returning to the woods to meet some capers in the not-too-distant future.”
