Emma Roddick MSP highlights the importance of accessible transport for young islanders as free inter-island ferry travel for under 22s is secured.
Emma Roddick MSP has welcomed new Scottish Government funding to support small food and drink business in Orkney through the latest round of the Regional Food Fund.
Grants of up to £5000 have been awarded to 15 innovative and collaborative projects across Scotland, with funding supporting everything from farmers markets and festivals to food tourism and skills development.
Orkney Food and Drink Festival has been awarded £5,000 in funding. Delivered by regional food group, Orkney Food and Drink, this two-day festival will bring together the island’s businesses to sell their products to visitors and locals. Funding will support venue and promotional costs.
This funding helps showcase Scotland’s world-class local produce and supports rural jobs.
Scotland’s food and drink sector is worth £15 billion to the economy and is one of the country’s largest employers.
Since 2021, over £500,000 has been distributed through the Regional Food Fund, supporting more than 100 projects to date.
Commenting, Emma Roddick MSP said:
“Orkney’s food and drink sector is a real point of pride, and this funding will help ensure that local producers continue to get the recognition and support they deserve. The Orkney Food and Drink Festival is a brilliant showcase of what the islands have to offer, and it’s great to see the Scottish Government investing in its success.
“This support isn’t just about one event, it’s about backing the small businesses, communities, and people behind it all. As costs continue to rise, the SNP is stepping in with targeted action to keep our local economies strong.
“We’ll keep delivering for rural Scotland and standing by those working hard to promote Orkney’s produce, culture, and community.”
