Emma Roddick MSP welcomes continued 100% rates relief for Islands hospitality businesses

Emma Roddick MSP for the Highlands and Islands region today welcomed the Scottish Government’s confirmation that 100% rates relief for hospitality businesses in the islands, including Orkney and Shetland, will continue. Ms Roddick has been a strong advocate for this relief, recognising the vital role that hospitality plays in the island economies.

Ms Roddick emphasised the importance of this support for businesses in Orkney and Shetland, which face specific challenges related to their geography, including increased transport costs for supplies and staff, seasonal fluctuations in trade, and the ongoing impact of the cost of living crisis. She highlighted the crucial role that pubs, restaurants, and hotels play in sustaining island communities and attracting tourism.

She said:

“This is a very positive announcement for hospitality businesses in Orkney and Shetland.

“The 100% rate relief provides crucial support, allowing businesses to continue to operate and contribute to the local economy. In our island communities, it’s important that businesses can both take advantage of tourist numbers at key times of the year, but also make a living throughout the year and provide spaces for locals. I’m delighted that the Government has recognised the particular challenges faced by island businesses and has committed to extending this vital support.”

Ms Roddick also acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by the hospitality sector in Orkney and Shetland, particularly regarding inter-island connectivity and the impact of severe weather, and reiterated her commitment to working with businesses to ensure they have the support they need to grow. She welcomes any correspondence on issues that constituents would like support with.
