WE MUST END THE STIGMA EXPERIENCED BY PET OWNERS IN THE RENTAL MARKET, SAYS SNP MSP

MSP for the Highlands & Islands Emma Roddick has highlighted the stigma that exists for pet owners who are trying to access the rental market.

The SNP MSP was taking part in a meeting of the Local Government, Housing and Planning Committee remotely last week, when her pet cat, Blue, made an appearance in shot. The Committee was discussing part of the proposed Housing Bill which would prevent landlords from stopping their tenants keeping pets.

Speaking after, Emma said:

“It is deeply concerning that some still view pets as a luxury and that those on lower incomes do experience stigma and judgment for being pet owners.

“I once had a pet refused by a landlord because they believed that people who rent have less money and lack the ability to look after an animal. When I spoke to Blue Cross in committee, the witness said that too many people still view pets as a ‘luxury item’ rather than a member of the family, as many of us who live with animals see them as.

“I have heard about how many animals are surrendered to rescue centres due to landlord bans, and from people in the housing sector who tell us that some folk choose homelessness over giving up their pet – this is a serious issue.

“Moving forward, whether pets can stay in rented accommodation should be a consideration of animal welfare – whether the home is suitable for that animal – rather than quick judgements and blanket bans which force people out of secure housing.

“The Housing Bill must work to dismantle this stigma and ensure that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has the opportunity to care for their pets.”
