Highlands & Islands MSP Emma Roddick was in Nairn this week to meet with Sam Hey, founder of Team Hamish to hear about the charity’s work and plans to create a family-friendly social gathering space on Nairn Links.
Team Hamish was established in memory of Sam Hey’s son, Hamish, who passed away at 8 years old from a rare form of cancer. The charity has since been working towards creating a lasting legacy for Hamish with their ‘splashpad’ play area launched in 2021.
Ms Roddick met with Mr Hey to discuss his latest plans to revitalise Nairn Links by developing new footpaths and creating a bespoke seating area which could be used for social gatherings, performances, and educational purposes.
Ms Roddick welcomed the news that the charity’s plans had been given the green light by Highland Council, expressing her admiration for Team Hamish’s dedication to the Nairn community and to honouring Hamish’s memory.
She said:
“It was so great to meet with Sam and hear about Team Hamish’s vision for Nairn Links.
“I loved hearing about how popular the splashpad play area has been with kids and families in Nairn since it opened two years ago and how enthusiastic Sam is about expanding that community space.
“I am so impressed by the time and dedication that has gone into every step of Team Hamish’s plans which will have a hugely positive impact on the community here in Nairn and of course, honouring Hamish’s life.
“Seeing community-led, community-focused action like this really is one of my favourite parts of my job.
“I am so grateful to Sam for taking the time to share Team Hamish’s story and show me around the new site that will soon be an important space for the community in Nairn. I can’t wait to see it come to life!”
