Highlands & Islands MSP Emma Roddick recently visited staff, volunteers, and service users at L’Arche Highland. Ms Roddick visited two of the charity’s shared homes which each provide supported accommodation to up to seven adults with disabilities, and chatted to service users at the four workshops which give people with learning disabilities the chance to gain employment skills.
L’Arche Highland, which currently runs four shared homes in Inverness, supports those with learning disabilities, championing their sense of belonging and contribution to their communities and the wider world. Ms Roddick said she was touched by the level of care and support provided by staff and volunteers.
Commenting on her visit, she said:
“The work of the staff and volunteers at L’Arche Highland is incredibly valuable. It is clear to see the difference that is being made to the lives of service users and how much the community means to them.
“Their approach to care goes beyond meeting basic needs, with a real emphasis on creating a sense of belonging, something that can be extremely difficult for those with learning difficulties.
“I was particularly interested in the various workshops that were on offer, and got to chat with people who take part in woodwork, candle-making, gardening, and life skills – which, on that day, was focused on making gingerbread for a Christmas party. Folk travel from far and wide, even in the snow, to come to work there and I encourage anyone who’s looking to buy a new houseplant, gorgeous woodwork, or some candles, to check out their offerings.
“I’d like to thank the team at L’Arche Highland for welcoming me into their wonderful community, and I very much hope to visit again in the future. For now, my lovely sheep-shaped candle is in my office in Parliament to remind me of a wonderful day.”
