Powers of independence desperately needed to curb cost-of-living crisis, says SNP MSP

SNP MSP Emma Roddick has welcomed the launch of the Scottish Government’s fresh campaign for independence, highlighting the opportunities that could be presented for the Highlands and Islands.

Today’s publication from the Scottish Government, the first in a series of documents, outlines how other comparable nations are wealthier, happier and fairer than Scotland currently is.

Speaking to parliament today [14th June], Roddick said:

“It is an exciting moment, during very challenging times, to be discussing the opportunities of Scottish independence.  Scotland has the potential to have world-leading standards in housing, health, and wellbeing, and we need to grasp this opportunity.

“Scotland hasn’t voted for a Tory government once in my lifetime and yet I have witnessed the devastating effects of years of Tory cuts and Brexit, leading us into the crisis we are now facing.

“This is especially relevant to my region, the Highlands and Islands, which is home to some of the highest levels of fuel poverty.  The Scottish Government needs the full powers of independence to turn this around and I welcome today’s publication highlighting this.”
