Highlands and Islands MSP Emma Roddick “delighted” to see carer’s allowance supplement doubled for winter

Emma Roddick, MSP for the Highlands and Islands, has stated she is “delighted” to see the bill to double this winter’s Carer’s Allowance Supplement payment passed on Thursday the 7th of October after a session of intense debate.

Speaking following the vote, Roddick said:

“I’m delighted to see that unpaid carers will be getting an extra £231.40 in their pockets this winter.

“At a time when Universal Credit is being cut, furlough is ending, National Insurance is increasing and the cost of living continues to rise, this money will undoubtedly help bring some security and peace of mind to Scotland’s carers.

“Unpaid carers are the backbone of Scotland’s care system, but Carer’s Allowance is the lowest-paid of all working-age benefits provided by the UK Government. The Carer’s Allowance Supplement top-up makes Scotland the only part of the UK where that isn’t the case.

“This move shows the commitment of the SNP-led Scottish Government to building a fair and just society.

“I look forward to the implementation of Carer’s Assistance under Social Security Scotland to drive that ambition going forward.”
