FIRST MINISTER TO STAND DOWN

Today, Humza Yousaf announced he would stand down as First Minister.

Speaking on the announcement, Emma said:

“An emotional resignation from an honest and dedicated First Minister. Humza led government through positive progress on rural and islands housing, agreeing priorities for delivering for the islands, and addressing depopulation, which I have the privilege of working on.

“From engagement with my constituents, it is clear his leadership on Gaza – unmatched in the UK – was important and meaningful to many. I have watched him take endless criticism and racial abuse for this stance, but he never wavered and was unapologetic in sticking to his principles which the party at large shares.

“I will remember his leadership for all of that and for his approachability. He was visible across Scotland, including the Highlands & Islands, and I hope his successor will continue that important work of making themselves accessible to everyone regardless of where they live.

“Geographical inequality isn’t solved overnight, but on that & so many other issues, I know we’ve been going in the right direction. I’m proud to have been a part of that and I’ll continue to play whatever part I can in the SNP’s work to tackle poverty and gain our independence.”
